Normally you will find the screen adaptation of a novel tends to lack substance and detail and therefore not live up to the novel, however with 'Trainspotting' that was certainly not the case. The novel and screen adaptation are almost on-par with each other (though the movie does miss out a few moments and a few characters have been removed or forgotten) it is still absolutely brilliant and captures the novel almost perfectly. Staring Ewan McGregor and directed by Danny Boyle, the film is set in Edinburgh, Scotland, in the late 1980's and follows the story of Mark Renton, a scottish youth and heroin addict on his journey to rehabilitation (however it is so much more than just his story or a story of rehabilitation). The film with it's fantastic plot, music, actors and basically every other feature a film should have makes it incredible and one of my favorites, if not my FAVOURITE film, definitively one to see if you haven't already.
The plot though very strong (much like the novel) is not the films 'best part', it is in fact the cinematography that is its best attribute. With Danny Boyle as the director it could be expected, but the film is truly a visual feast, employed in a very clever way. The visuals and filming are strong throughout the film, however my personal favourite pieces of cinematography in the film are the scene when 'Renton' climbs into the shit-ridden toilet, his 'trip' which leads him to feel as if he is sinking into the floor and also his come down, however the whole film is of cinematographic excellence.
As well as the film being utterly brilliant, the heroin-chic fashion of the era that was present in the late 1980's-early 90's shown in the film really appeals to me and inspires me to invest in a combination of some absolutely horrendous, trashy items of clothing such as: tie dye t-shirts, tight jeans, awful trainers, strappy camis and hideous scrunchies worn together and paired with a good high ponytail or two side buns. However, the minimalistic pieces also reach out to me.
I will definitely have to start a little heroin-chic capsule wardrobe in the near future!
Renton, the films main character
And again...Isn't he gorgeous?
The not so 'wolf pack'
Thanks for reading, now get off here and go watch 'Trainspotting'.
